Afrikaans for ‘Red Bush’, Rooibos is an herb and a member of the Legume family of plants. It grows exclusively in the Cedarberg Mountains and around Clanwilliam and Citirudal regions in South Africa. Rooibos is widely claimed to have been used by the Ancient Bushmen (San People) of the region. Large-scale cultivation and industrial processing of the plant started during the 1930s.

Rooibos Processing

The leaves of the Rooibos bush are harvested, bruised, finely chopped, moistened and fermented in mounds. Finally they are dried naturally in sun. This results in richly flavored and distinct, thin red-colored leaves.

Wonder Herb

Rooibos is caffeine free and contains Aspalathin, a flavonoid present in medicinal herbs used to treat skin and circulatory disorders. It also contains traces of minerals such as Calcium and Manganese.

Suggested Use

​Steep one teaspoon in eight ounces of filtered water at 180ºF for three minutes. Rooibos is delicious iced or in chai, smoothies and syrups.
